Following God’s Call to India

My husband and I strive to live by this conviction: where the Lord takes us, we will obey. Now that we are in our retired senior years, we have the flexibility to join mission trips whenever the opportunity arises. We have often said that everything we have is the Lord’s—our home, our finances, and even our time. So, we made a commitment: rather than using our fixed retirement income on sightseeing vacations, we would invest in ministry opportunities.

When our church presented an opportunity to serve in India, we didn’t hesitate. A dear friend was hosting the outreach, and we knew this was God’s leading.

I set out on this trip unsure of what my role would be, but trusting God’s plan. Looking back, I’m so grateful I took that step.

India lies within the 10/40 Window, a region known for its spiritual resistance and, at times, outright hostility toward Christianity. While we were not in immediate danger, discretion was necessary. We had to be mindful of how we spoke about our mission, as Christians in the northern regions often face severe persecution—beatings, arrests, and even the destruction of their homes. Our host assured us that the region we were in was more open, but he still took precautions to ensure our safety. Respecting his guidance, we followed his instructions carefully.

We had the privilege of ministering to pastors and their wives in rural farming communities. Their hunger for biblical truth was humbling, and their eagerness to learn reminded me of why we had come. A systematic, in-depth approach to studying Scripture (book-by-book, chapter-by-chapter, and verse-by-verse) was new to them. They deeply appreciated our pastor’s ability to bring Scripture to life through relatable, everyday anecdotes—much like Jesus did in His parables.

It was truly God who orchestrated this trip. The believers who welcomed us radiated a sincere love for the Lord, and we witnessed their unwavering dedication to sharing the gospel. Seeing their passion in action expanded our vision and deepened our faith.

The gratitude I feel toward the Lord for allowing me to be part of this mission is beyond words. This trip broadened our hearts, our perspective, and our trust in God’s plan.

To those whose hearts are stirred to reach the unreached: be prepared to step out of your comfort zone. Be prepared to be inconvenienced. The journey may stretch you, but the blessings will far outweigh any challenges you face.

These are people whom the Lord deeply loves. The harvest is plentiful in this spiritually restricted place. While the doors are still open, let us pray for more workers to rise up—workers who will train faithful pastors and leaders in India, equipping them to teach the truth of God’s Word and bring their own people to Christ.

Luke 10:2 (NKJV): “Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”
