If God is so good, why would He send people to hell?
Well, how would we describe a good justice system? If someone wronged us, should things be made right, and should the person be held accountable for the wrong thing done? Most likely we’ll say, “Yes!”
All of us have gone against the Lord, even in small ways. God’s standard is perfection and no one, absolutely no one, can achieve perfection in this imperfect world. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23). And “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). God is just and He cannot allow sin to go unpunished. Since all have sinned, everyone would die spiritually and should be hell-bound.
Truth is, God does not want anyone to go to hell. He loves us so much that He provided the way to achieve justice. God sent His Son Jesus Christ to take the punishment of death that we deserve. All He asks is from us is to believe in Him so that instead of our death, we accept His substitutionary sacrifice. “He who believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16b)
Our spiritual destination is not decided by the presence and magnitude of sin, but whether we accept Jesus’ sacrifice for the forgiveness of sin. So yes, some people will go to hell because God is just. But who will go there? “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” (John 3:18) And because God is just, He gives everyone the opportunity to choose Jesus or reject Him. His great love provides the way to ensure an eternal life in heaven and avoid hell.
God does not send people to hell. It is a choice a person makes when he or she rejects Jesus.
God is Just.
